Filler Advances to Finals of Rasson 10-Ball Masters

Joshua Filler’s impressive performance at the Rasson 10-Ball Masters Championship continued on Sunday morning.

The German used a powerful break and strong shot making to cruise to an easy 13-5 victory over Lee Vann Corteza in the semifinals at Astoria’s Steinway Billiards. Filler advances to Sunday evening’s finals where he will play the winner of the 2 p.m, localmatch between Dennis Orcullo and Alex Kazakis.

Filler jumped out to an early 4-0 in the race-to-13 set, using a run out followed by a break-and-run and a pair of safety battle victories. After the Filipino won the fifth game Filler took four of the next five games to build a commanding 8-2 lead. The young European had an opportunity to open a 9-2 lead but left a 5-ball hanging in the corner pocket’s jaws. He would bounce back, however, using two breaks-and-runs to win three straight and build an 11-3 advantage.

Although Corteza won 15th and 17th games to close to within 12-5 he could not mount a comeback as Filler closed out the match in the 18th game.

Filler was pleased with his overall performance in the match, considering it a stark contrast to Friday night when he struggled to maintain consistency. Looking for a solution to the difficult Rasson table with tighter pockets, the Mosconi Cup Most Valuable Players moved the position of the cue ball on his break shots and saw better success. Filler executed four breaks-and-runs during the match.

“I just tried to forget what happened on Friday. I had my good break and I had some good run outs. That was really important to my game,” Filler said.

After dropping his first match to Shane Van Boening, 11-6, the young German has been on a tear, winning seven straight matches. Friday night, Filler defeated Scotland’s Jayson Shaw 11-4 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals and overpowered Denis Grabe 13-5 of Estonia to earn a spot in Sunday’s semifinals.
