The first round of the second annual World Pool Series is officially underway, with 32 players opening competition at the Aramith 9-Ball Players Championship today in New York.
Competing at Astoria’s Steinway Billiards, the event opened with eight matches this morning and another eight will take place this afternoon – with the morning’s showcase match on the live video stream pairing Albania’s Klenti Kaci against Greece’s Nick Malaj. Kaci, who was a runner-up at last year’s U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships, is no stranger to the WPS – winning the Aramith Masters in April of last year and then taking the top honors in the Predator Grand Finale in November.
Other morning matches include Thorsten Hohmann against John Morra and Denis Grabe versus Alex Pagulayan.
The afternoon session will feature a 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time matchup of Mosconi Cup teammates as Jayson Shaw takes on the young and fiery Joshua Filler of Germany. Shaw is the defending U.S. Open 9-Ball champion and placed third at the Super Billiards Expo last week in Pennsylvania. The 20-year-old Filler is coming off of a breakthrough year in which he won the China Open, placed in the top-10 of the U.S. Open and was named Mosoni Cup Most Valuable Player.
In other matches, Ronnie Alcano faces Radoslaw Babica and Fedor Gorst squares off against Ralf Souquet.
